Aliquippa School District GRIOT Reading: Celebrating Black History Through Mentorship and Storytelling
On February 28, 2025, the Aliquippa community came together for a powerful event celebrating Black History Month—the Aliquippa School District GRIOT Reading. Co-organized by Pittsburgh Area Community Schools (PACS) and the Aliquippa PTSA, this annual tradition continues to create meaningful connections between students and alumni.
This year’s event was particularly special, as 45 Aliquippa High School graduates, including three current seniors, returned to inspire the next generation through storytelling and mentorship.
At Aliquippa Elementary, 33 men visited classrooms, reading stories and sharing words of encouragement.
At Aliquippa Jr. High, 12 women, all professionals and business leaders, engaged 7th and 8th graders, discussing their journeys and offering advice for the future.
The event draws inspiration from the West African tradition of the GRIOT, a storyteller, poet, and historian who preserves and shares cultural heritage. Through this gathering, students not only learned about Black history but also saw firsthand the power of mentorship and the strength of their own community.
The impact of this event extends beyond the classroom—it builds confidence, fosters connections, and reminds students that they are part of a legacy of excellence.
PACS is honored to help bring this tradition to life each year. A huge thank you to the Aliquippa PTSA, our dedicated PACS team, and every mentor who participated. Your presence and words will resonate with these students for years to come.
